One of the most common reasons for poor washing in a 5- to 10-year-old Whirlpool-built dishwasher (which includes Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid) is a failed wash pump/circulation pump. This can be an expensive repair, as the part alone costs between $200-250. With the service call and labor, depending on how difficult it is to pull the dishwasher out of the cabinet, the repair could be in the ballpark of $350-400.
Dishwashers today are unfortunately becoming more and more of a throwaway appliance due to the cost of parts, the cost of new dishwashers, and the often extra labor to uninstall and then reinstall the dishwasher after the repair has been made. Repairs are usually either just the service call charge or close to (and sometimes even exceeding) the cost of a new machine, very little in between.
